The Government of Canada is switching from cheques to direct deposit for all government payments.

What does this mean for you?

All payments that you would normally receive in the mail from the Government (GST/HST cheques, EI cheques, Canada Child Tax Benefit cheques, etc.) will now be deposited automatically into your bank account!

This is a way to receive your payments without having to deal with postal delay. This way, you get your money faster, and you can be sure that it will never be lost, stolen, or damaged. Also, if you move, your money will still be delivered to you (HOORAY!)

Swedish banks have stopped manual cash-handling services altogether in 65-75% of their local branches. They say cash is out as Swedes rely on credit cards, the Internet and mobile phones to make all their payments.

Those crafty Swedes, they think of everything! It’s likely that North America will follow suit, since most of us are basically connected to the Internet at the hip.
