Food accounts for a large majority of everyone’s budget. No matter what, you have to eat and this tends to be very pricey. There are a number of easy things that you can do to save money on groceries that will make a big difference. Here are five ways to save!

Grocery List

Going into the grocery store with a set grocery list will help you save money because you will know exactly what you are looking for. Having an idea of what types of food you will be buying things you actually need and every purchase will be purposeful.

Get a Points Card

Many stores have loyalty cards for their shoppers. These programs typically let you load the offers of the week before you go shopping so you know what is on sale, and then you redeem them once you pay. These points really do add up over time and you can put them towards free groceries.

Do the Math

Grocery stores will often have specials where you buy one and get one or more at a cheaper rate, but this may not always be the best deal. Even if buying two or buying the larger size is cheaper, make sure you will actually eat it before deciding to buy it. It’s better to spend a few cents more rather than waste a bunch of food.

Shop Once a Week

Whether you are shopping for just yourself or your whole family, reducing the number of times you go grocery shopping will save you some money. Many grocery stores have a discount day for students so you should try and get all your shopping done on this day.

Use an App

There are many helpful apps that will help you to cut down your spending on food and help you to be more thrifty.  Favado and Flipp are two great examples that can save you big bucks.
